If you are looking for the grandest church in Venice, Italy, you should check out Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. It is located at the center of San Polo and is visited by thousands of tourists every year for its excellent architecture and Venetian Renaissance art masterpieces done by famous artists and sculptures.

San Polo is among the smallest areas in Venice. It is dotted with shops and taverns selling the best food and wine that Venice is famous of.


DSCN1397 Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is a shrine for the Assumption of Mary. Land for the church was granted in 1250 but it was only in 1338 that the church was finished. Its campanile, considered to be the 2nd tallest in Venice, was built in 1396.

What to See

The church is simply built from the outside to comply with the Franciscan’s stand on austerity and vow of poverty. Despite this, the church has an Italian Gothic style and is grand because of its immensity. In the inside of the church, you can see the only existing rood screen in Venice to date and several Renaissance art masterpieces.

There is the Assumption of the Virgin which was made in 1518. Its distinct and bright colors made it unacceptable to the Franciscans at that time and they refused to display it in the church. This masterpiece was done by Titian, a famous artist which is also buried in one of the colossal tombs inside the church.

Aside from the Assumption of the Virgin, you can also see paintings of St. John the Baptist, Madonna and Child, St. Nicholas, St. Jerome and St. Peter. You can also see paintings by Donatello, Bellini, Vivarini and Canova at the church.
